i killed people, richie. the following argument was obvious: ‘no, you didn’t. ’ there was plenty of reason and justification for it, no one with all of the facts could blame the destruction that amaru caused on kate. except for kate. arguing with her was pointless –– stubborn, lionhearted, nothing he said could truly wash away the blood that had stained her hands. the physical things were easy to fix, a dirty motel sink could manage that much, but he recognized that her life had turned around too quickly for any average person to be able to wrap their mind around. “well, yours is still going, so.” the comment comes out somewhat more dismissive than what richard truly intended. a sigh escaped after a quiet moment, thin smoke leaving parted lips from the cigarette. “amaru’s gone. don’t live in her shadow.”
HIS DENIAL OF her statement was practically reflexive. she’s not surprised. she’d be sorta unnerved if he sat in silence beside her, weighing whether or not kate was guilty of such things. then again, sometimes she wonders how far that goes. how far would he let her spiral before being unable to forgive and forget ? what would it take to truly stain that pristine, strawberries and rose-gold image people seem so keen to cling onto ? …. - well, that’s not something kate thinks she really wants to know. not now, at least. she takes another drag off the cigarette, too deep and she tries to smother a cough with a hand over her mouth. it doesn’t quite work, but she can’t bring herself to feel embarrassed either way. soft voice is a little hoarser when she speaks this time round. ‘ i watched it all happen. y’know that ? i saw everything. at first she was making me. but after a while i couldn’t tell if she was forcing me or if i just couldn’t look away. ’ a gentle tap sends the ashes clinging to the orange ember swirling to the pavement. ‘ sometimes it doesn’t feel like she’s gone. not completely, anyway. ’
