BROWN COQUETTES STUDY her. The boy attempts to decipher what he sees. When obvious gestures & mannerisms appear, the Langdon boy can perceive the hardest kept secret a mile away— but the neurological wiring of his LACKED in certain capacities. The girl, she’s difficult to understand. It’d been a simple enough question. Tate had grown up with a poor example of a CHRISTIAN woman to his side ( his mother ) & by no means, whether the boy would have wanted it or not, had she attempted to instill any form of belief in him. The teenager, if only to a degree, now regrets the spontaneous inquiry— perhaps it’d been the WRONG thing to ask. Though sounding sure of herself, he could tell the answer had taken an inner recount & weighing of points— & it is the DEFENSIVE tone in her voice & the second half of her answer that surprises him.
“—- why not?” There was not enough depth to the question, not enough to match the subject, or the girl’s take of it. For Tate the question was simple, merely out of curiosity to the strange answer. “I mean, hypothetically speaking, I wouldn’t trust him myself but— why not?”
PEOPLE NEVER QUITE think it through, do they ? asking about religion, she means. most either want to convince her that god is a LIE or they want her to offer them salvation. that’s not her job anymore, though. kate needs all the salvation she can get for herself. idly, absently, right hand’s chipped-polish-clad thumb traces over thick scar marring the skin of left wrist. why not ? well, right now, there’s a million and one reasons why not. but kate can’t quite make herself comfortable with mentioning them to the boy in front of her. can’t mention them to richie or seth, either. she can’t bring herself to make the men more guilty than they already are. she’s lost her entire life because of them, hasn’t she ? yet she still stays with them - not scott, not freddie. the bank robbers.
KATE AFFORDS THE boy a small, VAGUE smile. ‘ what’s got you so interested ? ’ she questions. DEFLECTS. ‘ i’m not gonna try to sell you a bible or anythin. ’ unless he’s interested in the king james she carries around in her purse, but that has all sorts of nasty things inside of it - red ballpoint pen has scratched through the stolen motel pages like she’s digging for a still-beating heart. words and drawings litter the pages, nothing soft enough to be idle work. it’s always hard edges, forceful press of ink and rip of paper. ‘ i’ve only got th’ONE, anyway. ’
